Does my pool fence have to meet a standard?

Yes, pool and spa fencing must comply with AS 1926.1 and council rules: 1.2m minimum, no climbable gaps, gaps under 100mm and a self-closing self-latching gate. What compliance actually requires, and how to make sure it passes inspection first time.

A pool fence is the one fence with a law behind it. Get it wrong and it fails the safety inspection, so the certificate is held up. Here is the plain version of what the standard asks for.

The short answer

A pool barrier in Queensland has to meet AS 1926.1. The fence must be at least 1.2m high. Gaps have to stay under 100mm, including the gap under the fence. The gate has to swing away from the pool, close on its own, and latch on its own. There is also a non-climbable zone, so a child cannot use a rail as a foothold.

The rules that catch people out

A pool fence that looks fine can still fail on the gate or a single wide gap. We build to the standard from the start, so the inspection is a formality.

Where Postline makes it easy

We fit a lot of pool-compliant fencing on the Coast, in aluminium and in glass. We set the height, the gaps and the gate to AS 1926.1, and we tell you what the safety inspector will look for. You still book the certificate through a licensed pool safety inspector. We make sure there is nothing for them to pull you up on.

Ask this, exactly

“Will this fence meet AS 1926.1 for the pool, with a self-closing gate and the gaps under 100mm, so it passes the safety inspection?”

A barrier that meets the standard passes first time. A barrier built to look right, but not measured to the rules, fails on the gate or a gap.

One more thing

This is general guidance, not a substitute for a pool safety inspection. The certificate is issued by a licensed inspector. Tell us it is a pool fence on the measure and we build it to pass.

Common questions

Does my pool fence have to meet a standard?
Yes. In Queensland a pool barrier has to meet AS 1926.1 and the state pool safety laws. The barrier must be at least 1.2m high, with gaps under 100mm, and a gate that is self-closing and self-latching. We build to that standard and give you the detail you need for your pool safety certificate.
How high does a pool fence have to be?
At least 1.2m, measured from the finished ground on the outside. There is also a non-climbable zone, so we keep rails and footholds off the outside face. We set the height and the rail layout to the standard, not to guesswork.
Can I use glass for a pool fence?
Yes. Frameless and semi-frameless glass is a popular pool-grade option. It still has to meet the same height, gap and gate rules as any other barrier. We size the panels and the gaps so it passes inspection.
